Lothar Baumgarten (born 1944)
Baumgarten’s father was an anthropologist and the artist himself shares this interest. In particular he had long been fascinated by the landscape, the fauna and the indigenous peoples of South America. His work focuses attention on the manner in which the beauty and resources of poorer countries are systematically exploited to serve the needs of the developed world. This work shows an eagle’s feather, seen in close up, so that the image suggests a cloudscape. The title relates to the highland area on the border of Venezuela and Brazil.
